Star trails

I LOVE photography!!
Seriously. There are so many different fields in the vast world of photography, so much to explore and to learn. One simply can not ever tire of it. Up until a couple weeks ago, I had no interest in “landscape” photography. The honest reason is I’m not good at it, I see landscape as a backdrop for a successful portrait session. The backdrop itself, I used to find very boring on its own. Thanks to one of my clients (thanks Doug), I’ve met this amazing landscape photographer, Daniel Ewert. You must check out his imagery, I promise you’ll be blown away and in for a treat. He very kindly let me tag along with him this weekend on a photo expedition on the Pensacola beach. As cliché as this may sound, I just have to say it: I see the beach and landscape photography in a new light. And you wouldn’t believe the gentle pace: after 2 hours of photography, I came home with 29 frames!!! Now a portrait session would yield somewhere in the 400 picture range… lots of editing going along with those. It’s also very peaceful to have your camera set on bulb doing all the work. Very different than what I usually do with my 5D, and the result is beautiful. I’m very excited to have been introduced to this world of photography.
This isn’t the best star trail ever (something to do with our location, direction, time of night…), but it’s my first recording of it, and it’s still pretty neat. Daniel has some fantastic shooting star images..

Those are beautiful. In the last image, you captured the Orion Nebula. It's a fuzzy patch just below the three bright stars of Orion's belt.

For the same exposure time, the further south your exposure, the longer and flatter your star trails will be; more north, they will have a more pronounced arc, but shorter.

    Once again, great images!
